Definitions
It's very important for author to use definitions when trying to make a point to an audience. Definitions allow the audience to better understand and help get the exact point across that the author is trying to make. An example of this is an article given by the New York Times that talks about modern law enforcement and how it is becoming "militarized". http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/16/movies/review-peace-officer-explores-military-style-raids-by-law-enforcement.html?_r=0 This article defines what they are talking about when they say "militarized". The larger social picture that this article put across is that modern police are become more of a military then peace keepers and how people think that this needs to change.
